Assam Civil Services officer Hitesh Dev Sarma has been appointed as the new NRC State Coordinator.
The post of the NRC State Coordinator had been lying vacant since Prateek Hajela was transferred by the Supreme Court to Madhya Pradesh on a 3-year deputation.
A 1995-batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre, Hajela was tasked with supervising the massive National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation in Assam.
The final NRC list was published on August 31, from which over 19 lakh people were excluded.
