Assam Govt to Employ Trained Workers Only for PWD Road Construction

The existing standards for road construction have not been adhered to because engineers and contractors often rely solely on workers, said CM Sarma.
Amid growing concerns over the quality of road construction in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced that the state government is contemplating a new rule that will make it mandatory to employ trained workers only for the construction of Public Works Department (PWD) roads.
CM Sarma highlighted that the current use of untrained labourers has led to compromised construction standards, affecting the durability and safety of road infrastructure.
The proposed rule aims to address these issues by ensuring that all workers involved in PWD road projects have the basic necessary skills and training to meet established construction standards, said CM Sarma.
Speaking to the media, CM Sarma said, “The existing standards for road construction have not been adhered to because engineers and contractors often rely solely on workers without adequately overseeing the work. This lack of oversight, coupled with the employment of untrained workers, has led to substandard road construction. To fix this problem, the state government will now have to make it mandatory to use only trained workers for the construction of PWD roads.”
CM Sarma also spoke about the state government’s comprehensive skill training initiative and said that the state government has started giving training to registered construction workers, aligning trained resources across the industry from labourers to supervisors and integrating modern technology and future skills into the training curriculum.
