After Guwahati witnessed rampant violation of social distancing norms on the third day of 21-day nationwide lockdown, the Assam government ordered immediate closure of vegetable and meat markets in the city besides all areas falling under the jurisdiction of the Kamrup (M) district administration.
The effect shall remain in place until further notice. The move comes after people thronged the markets in large numbers to buy essentials by clearly violating the lockdown norms.
Long queues of customers were seen today in Fancy Bazar, Ganeshguri areas of Guwahati to buy vegetables. The rules of social distancing were violated in various parts of the city, following which the administration has asked the shopkeepers to down their shutters.
Authorities initiated a system of Public Distribution System throughout the city of Guwahati where trucks laden with vegetables stood at seven specific points in the city. A temporary market was also set up at the premises of the old jail in the city’s Fancy Bazar area. Large number of vendors gathered there to sell vegetables and fruits.
People in Guwahati thronged the markets to buy vegetables, after chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday announced that selling of vegetables and other necessary items has been exempted within the stipulated time.
