Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is a ‘Man on a Mission’. From launching a all out war on drugs to paving way for permanent peace in the state, Sarma has now pledged to revive the bleak power sector in Assam.
Reviewing the power scenario at the Bijulee Bhawan in Guwahati, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government is targeting to minimize the revenue loss incurred by the 3 power companies namely the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL) and the Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited (AEGCL).
Taking to Twitter after the review meeting, Sarma said, “With Power Minister @BimalBorahbjp held a review meet with officials of APDCL, APGCL, AEGCL & Power Dept. Asked companies to plug revenue loss and design modalities to increase their revenue earnings and profits including an energised service delivery system for consumers.”
Sarma revealed that the power companies are facing loss to the tune of Rs 300 crore per month against supply of power to consumers. Sarma also said that manipulation in bills also has come to light.
Chief Minister Sarma pointed out that the burden of power theft or non-payment of electricity bills fall on those consumers who regularly pay their bills. He said if revenue loss is minimized, consumers will have to pay less in terms of electricity bills.

It may be mentioned that the Assam government has launched a massive crackdown against power theft result in transfer and even suspension of some top officials in the APDCL.
