First Published: 26th October, 2023 20:20 IST

The order said that no female government servant shall marry any person whose wife is alive, without first obtaining the permission of the government

The Assam government today announced a new rule stating that state government employees cannot get married for a second time without prior permission from the state government. Anybody found violating the rule would have to pay a hefty fine.

The rule has been issued with immidiate effect.

The order from the office of Principal Secretary, Government of Assam, Niraj Verma, stated that any government employee (both male and female) found to be in violation of this rule will not just attract a hefty fine but would also have to face a departmental inquiry.

“As per the provisions of Rule 26 of The Assam Civil Services (Conduct) Rulcs 1965, no government servant who has a wife living shall contract another marriage without first obtaining the permission of the Government, notwithstanding that such subsequent marriage is permissible under the personal law for the time being applicable to him,” the order read.

“In the context of the above provisions, the Disciplinary Authority may initiate immediate Departmental Proceeding under the provision of the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules 1964, for imposition of major penalty including compulsory retirement against those government servants found to have violated Rule 26 of the Assam Civil Services (Conduct) Rules 1965, which itself is a gross misconduct on the part of a government servant having large bearings on the society,” said the order.
