The Assam government has committed to fully supporting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its probe into the recent stock trading scam. This initiative comes in the wake of an official notification detailing the investigation of 41 cases associated with the fraud.
The Chief Minister’s Office in a social media post issued a statement and said that the official notification regarding the apex investigation agency taking over the probe has been issued. Earlier this month, Chief Minister Sarma announced the transfer of all registered cases to the CBI, emphasizing the importance of a fair investigation. On social media platform X, he stated, “To ensure a fair investigation on the online stock trading scam, we requested the Government of India to formally hand over all 41 registered cases to the CBI.”
CM Sarma reassured the public of a comprehensive investigation, highlighting the state’s commitment to addressing such issues effectively.
In response to this request, the Central Government has approved the extension of CBI’s jurisdiction in Assam. An official notification from the Department of Personnel and Training, dated September 13, 2024, empowers CBI officers to investigate cases related to the scam, including those involving employees of Central Government institutions and private individuals. However, any inquiries involving Assam state government officials will necessitate prior written consent from the state government.
Notably, the Assam cabinet decided to hand over 32 cases related to the trading investment scam to the CBI. Before that the police made several arrests, including 22-year-old Bishal Phukan, followed by actor and influencer Sumi Bora and her husband.
