The death toll in Assam’s devastating floods has mounted to 38, with 3 more deaths reported in the last 24 hours due to drowning in floodwaters.

According to the latest report from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two persons lost their lives in Tinsukia district, while one person died in Dhemaji district on Tuesday.

As per the latest report, over 11.34 lakh people in 28 districts have been affected by the flood.

Lakhimpur district is one of the worst-hit areas, with over 1.65 lakh people affected, followed by Darrang district, where over 1.47 lakh people are affected.

Yesterday, the water level of the mighty Brahmaputra River rose above the danger level mark at several points, including Neamatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, and Dhubri, exacerbating the flood situation in the region.

Meanwhile, even as the decrease in water levels of the Brahmaputra River in various parts of eastern Assam has led to a marginal improvement in the overall flood situation in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts today, however due to the sudden rise of water level of the Burhi Dihing River, one of its major tributaries of the Brahmaputra the flood situation has once again turned grim in the villages under Moran, Khowang, Tingkhong, Naharkatia and Tengakhat areas.

The Burhi Dihing River after crossing its danger level at Khowang in Dibrugarh district had risen to an all-time high of 104.23 metres at 2 am today.

Around 50 villages are severely affected by the floods due to the breach of two earthen dykes at Haldhibari and Kawaimari and the surge of water through another dyke at Bagamur.

Earlier on Tuesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took stock of the flood situation at various places including Golaghat and Kaziranga.

Sharing a video on X, CM Sarma said that he has directed concerned departments and officials to take steps to address people’s woes and to mitigate the flood situation as soon as possible.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal will reach Dibrugarh today to review the flood situation.
