Assam: Elephants run riot in Numaligarh; 40 yr old woman trampled to death by jumbo in Nagaon

Durga Puja festivities have been marred in Assam’s Numaligarh region with elephants running riot in several places.

People are spending sleepless nights trying to defends their homes from the marauding jumbos and even using toy trumpets and such other items to scare off elephants which would have been otherwise used as amusement during the Puja season.

On Monday night, an elephant herd raided the paddy fields of Jakoson near Numaligarh and made it’s way through a tea estate. Local people and authorities seem to be at a loss as to how to control the situation.

Meanwhile, elephant menace has also been witnessed at Gohagaon near Lanka in Assam’s Nagaon district. A herd of 25 elephants have been creating menace in the region.

A 40-year-old woman identified as Sukhiya Devi died after being trampled by a jumbo belonging to the herd. The herd also raided sugarcane farms in the region.
