Assam: Dreaded criminal Bubu Konwar killed in encounter with police in Sivasagar

Bubu Konwar, one of Assam’s most dreaded criminals, who was responsible for several high-profile murders and claimed to have killed 42 people over the years, was killed by the Assam police in an encounter on Wednesday evening in Geleky area of Sivasagar district.

Acting on a tip the Sivasagar police laid a trap for the dreadful criminal, as they were informed about Bubu Konwar showing up for an arms deal in the area.

According to the police, around 6.45 PM two individuals were spotted on a scooty and were asked to stop. They opened fire at the police and Konwar was shot dead by the police after he tried to flee from the spot.

Konwar was injured during the retaliation. He was brought dead to the hospital.

Bubu Konwar, a dreaded criminal, had as many as 14 cases registered against him in different police stations in the Sivasagar district alone, including a murder case of a Congress worker of Amguri Hemanta Bora.

The police also recovered one 7.65 mm pistol, one magazine, five live ammunition, bullets and a scooter.

Speaking to the media Sivasagar Superintendent of Police  Rakesh Raushan informed that acting on tip police launched an operation to nab Konwar. They were informed that Konwar will be present in Geleky for an arms deal.

“Around 6:45 PM the police noticed two persons were travelling in a scooty in Geleky.  The police asked the duo to stop. But they opened fire on the police team. In self-defence the police did also start firing in which Babu Konwar sustained bullet injury and was declared brought dead by the doctors in Geleky civil hospital,” the Sivasagar SP informed.

Special DGP GP Singh also took his Twitter handle to share the news.

He wrote, “One veteran criminal Bubu Konwar has been grievously injured in the exchange of fire with @SivasagarPolat Geleky, Sibsagar when he targeted the police team. Has been taken to hospital. One pistol has been recovered from his possession @assampolice.”

In another tweet Singh added, “The said Bubu Konwar succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at Geleky Civil Hospital.”

In 2016, the most wanted criminal admitted of murdering at least 42 people. At least 50 cases, including seven murders and 27 car thefts were registered across districts of the state.

As per reports, the 45-year-old had 14 criminal cases registered under different police stations in the Sivasagar district alone.
