Child marriages will be completely eradicated from Assam in the next two years. Echoing similar views as that of the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam DGP GP Singh today reaffirmed that the state will have zero cases of child marriages within the next two years, that is by 2026.
Addressing a press conference today, DGP Singh said that the trend of child marriages has already been declining since the mega crackdown was launched.
He said that in the first phase, over 4,000 cases had been detected which have now dreastically come down to 710 in the second phase of the drive.
The DGP added that the positive trend is an indication that the cases will soon come down to zero. DGP Singh further added that the Police will continue launching drives against child marriages.
The state DGP, while speaking in detail on the second phase of the drive against child marriages, informed that about 710 cases have been reported and 1100 people have been accused. Of these, the police have detained 915 people who have been involved in child weddings so far.
DGP Sharma, informed that the two accused have gone underground after the crime.
