A special meeting to review the covid scenario of Assam will be held in Dispur today under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The meeting will take stock of the current status of Covid-19 in the state and hold talks on the release of a new SOP in the state in view of the rising cases in the state.
With the third wave of Covid already making its presence felt throughout the state, Assam is also feeling the brunt with the rise in the number of cases.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarma has made it clear that if more than 1000 cases are reported daily from the state then the government will have no other option but to clamp in restrictions. There is also a chance that physical classes for students below the age of 15 may get closed down. Wearing of masks will be mandatory in public and there would be restrictions in public gatherings. However, CM Sarma ruled out the possibility of a lockdown in the state.
Assam’s Covid case tally is steadily rising with a total of 591 fresh cases detected on January 5th. Of these, a total of 279 cases have been detected in Kamrup (Metro) district marking a significant rise since the previous day which was just 190.
The fresh cases have been detected out of more than 34,000 tests conducted in the state. Meanwhile, four Covid related deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours.
While Assam’s Covid positivity rate stands at 1.72 percent, the state’s recovery rate stands at 98.47 percent.
