Humilitating defeat and my conscience does does not allow me to continue as president of the party, Chief of Assam Congress party Ripun Bora wrote in his resignation letter to party president Rahul Gandhi

This is the fifth resignation of party chiefs from across the country, after the party’s dismal performance in the Lok Sabha elections in Assam. The Congress party managed to get 52 seats, just 8 more than the 44 it had won earlier in 2014.

Bora’s resignation comes amid resignations by Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan and chiefs of Karnataka, Odisha and UP Congress chiefs.

With regard to Bora’s resignation, it is interesting to note that despite the massive Modi wave, particularly in the northeast, and the BJP managing to bag 17 of the 25 seats in the region, Congress managed to hold on to its three seat number this time too even in the face of a Modi sweep.

Therefore, Bora terming his party’s defeat as humiliating and therefore he has to step down, is something that many are unable to take line down. The recent spate of resignations from the various party chiefs is being seen more as a pressure building tactic for Rahul Gandhi to resign.

Congress national president Rahul Gandhi too had offered his resignation but the Congress top brass rejected it. Reports are still doing the rounds that he is adamant on resigning but we are yet to hear of any such thing.
