Assam Coal Mine Tragedy Day 6: Fourth Dead Body of Labour Trapped in Coal Mine Recovered

The first body recovered on Wednesday, two days after the incident happened, was of Ganga Bahadur Srestho who was a resident of Nepal.

As the rescue operation entered its sixth day today, a fourth body has been recovered from the flooded mine in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso, Assam.

Three bodies have so far been recovered today. Of the nine trapped workers, the first body was brought out from the quarry on Wednesday.

Today, the first body had been identified as that of Lijan Magar, a resident of Umrangso. The identity of the other two bodies recovered today is still not know.

The first body recovered on Wednesday, two days after the incident happened, was of Ganga Bahadur Srestho who was a resident of Nepal.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a post on X, said,
“Another body was recovered from the Umrangsu mine a short while ago, marking the third recovery so far. The identification process is currently underway.”

Earlier, Chief Minister Sarma stated that the Umrangso coal mine in Dima Hasao, where nine miners have been trapped since January 6, was declared abandoned 12 years ago, not illegal. His remarks came as dewatering efforts continued to enable the resumption of rescue operations.
