Assam CM Sarma Lambasts DU for Poor Handling of Ragging Incident, Says No One will be Spared

University authorities too would come under the ambit of the police investigation. Police has been directed to investigate if anyone was trying to cover up anything
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday lambasted the Dibrugarh University authorities for its lax attitude and utter failure in handling the “serious offence” of ragging that took place in PNGBC hostel of the University on November 26 night.
“The Dibrugarh University authorities have failed to show the aggression and courage in its fight against ragging. The Cabinet sees it as utmost failure and incompetence of the university as the investigating committee has not been able to submit its report till yesterday for the incident that took place in September.
We have expressed our dissatisfaction regarding the way Dibrugarh University has dealt with such a serious offence,” CM Sarma said briefing the media in Silchar after the Cabinet meeting today.
“Dibrugarh police has been instructed to investigate if anyone was trying to hide anything. University authorities also will come under the ambit of the police investigation and police will find out if anyone amongst them were trying to cover up anything.
I spoke to the police at 1.30AM that night and asked them to arrest the culprits then and there. Whoever are absconding will be arrested too and if there has been any complicity on the part of the authorities, they will not be spared,” the CM said.

Giving a strong warning to all students, the CM said, “Ragging will not be tolerated in any college, University of Assam. There will be zero tolerance for ragging”.
Regarding the treatment of Anand Sharma who is admitted in ICU, the CM said that he has already directed DC Dibrugarh to ensure that Anand gets the best treatment and in case his parents wants to shift him then the Education Minister would facilitate by making the necessary arrangements.
Meanwhile, in some shocking revelations, warden of Block C, PNGBC hostel Dr Dibya Jyoti Dutta informing Northeast Live that he had informed the higher authorities as soon as he got the letter from Anand on November 17.
He further said that there are 3 more incidents of ragging which has been reported to the higher authorities.
A magisterial enquiry is underway and a report is likely to be filed in couple of days. ADC and Magistrate Sanghamitra Baruah recoded the statement of the Registrar, Dean and Chief Warden Kalyan Dutta.
The University has suspended 4 accused students — Dibyajyoti Gogoi, 3rd semester student of Department of Applied Geology, Subhrajit Baruah, 3rd semester Pol Science student, Niranjon Thakur, 3rd semester, Centre for Studies in Physical Education and Sports and Kalyan Dutta, 3rd semester Department of History student of Dibrugarh University.
The fifth accused – Rahul Chetry, an ex-student of the University is on the run.
