Assam CM launches COVID-19 vaccination drive; Dr. Milan Kumar Laskar receives first shot of vaccine

After the nationwide launch of the world’s largest inoculation exercise against the novel Coronavirus by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, Assam too joined the rest of the country in the vaccination campaign with Dr. Milan Kumar Laskar receiving the first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine in Assam’s Bokakhat.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday launched the COVID-19 vaccination drive in Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) Dibrugarh. On the other hand,  Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the vaccination program at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

Several senior doctors of the state have been administered Covid vaccination. GMCH Superintendent Dr. Abhijeet Sarma also took his first shot of the Covishield vaccine in Guwahati.

Speaking to reporters Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Today is a day of pride for India. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi scientists of the country have come up with a locally made vaccine which we are able to launch today. I thank the prime minister and the people of Assam are grateful for this strong resolution.”

“Today, we are starting the vaccination drive in Assam through the Health Department and I strongly believe that the public of Assam will cooperate with us in this noble work. A total of 65 centres in 33 districts including 7 medical colleges and 24 district hospitals have started the COVID-19 vaccination drive,” said Sonowal.

“The target of the first phase is to vaccinate 1,90,000 health care workers and 1,00,000 frontline workers in the second phase with. We will complete the vaccination process in time. I request cooperation from everyone. I thank the five senior medical practitioners of AMCH who participated in the vaccination,” said CM Sonowal.

One lakh ninety thousand Covid warriors would be vaccinated in the first phase at 65 session sites in a span of 8 weeks.
