Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the bold decision from the Government of India to reduce the ambit of AFSPA is a message that Northeast is now ready for peace and rapid progress development. CM Sarma also pointed out that with the decision to reduce the ambit of AFSPSA, around 60% of the total area of Assam will no longer be under the act from midnight tonight.

There is jubilation in the Northeast following the Centre’s landmark decision with chief ministers of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur hailing the move made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The reduction in the areas under AFSPA came at a time when there has been demand for several quarters for complete withdrawal of the act from across the region after the Oting firing incident.
