Assam CM Himanta Biswa does another first, holds Cabinet meeting sitting on the floor

In a first, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is holding his Cabinet’s meeting at Gandhi Mandap, one of the historic sites of Guwahati sitting on the floor. As the name suggests, the Gandhi Mandap is a monument built in memory of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. The monument is atop the Sarania Hill of Guwahati.

Gandhiji visited Saranya hills, therefore, the Mandap was built in that spot. It was inaugurated former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Former Chief Minister of Assam BishnuramMedhi in 1970.

CM Sarma holding the Cabinet meeting at the Gandhi Mandap is uniquely unique because the Mandap holds a different significance. What was also interesting is that the entire Assam Cabinet squatted on mattresses on the floor and just had some make shift desks for the files and papers.

Assam CM Sarma is known for his flair of doing things differently. Since he took over as the Chief Minister of the state, he has been holding the Cabinet meetings outside the Secretariat in Dispur. The last cabinet meeting was held in New Delhi. CM Sarma also introduced the serving of traditional Assamese snacks like pitha and laru at Cabinet meetings and other official events.
