Assam CM Advises Residents to Stay Indoors Amid Flood, Blames Meghalaya Private University for City Floods

Assam CM said, “On Monday, Guwahati received 25% of the season’s rainfall. The drainage system in Guwahati is currently not equipped to handle such a massive flood situation.”
After the massive flash floods that plagued Guwahati on Monday, when the entire city was crippled by urban floods after an hour of downpour, Guwahati experienced another potential flash flood as heavy rainfall lashed the city on Wednesday afternoon.
Amid torrential rain and heavy flooding in the city, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged all residents to remain indoors.
Taking to X, CM Sarma wrote, “Guwahati is experiencing another round of heavy rain. We request everyone to stay indoors and avoid using vehicles unless absolutely necessary. Additionally, please avoid vehicular movement towards the downtown hospital areas on GS Road.”
While speaking to the media, Assam CM said, “On Monday, Guwahati received 25% of the season’s rainfall. The drainage system in Guwahati is currently not equipped to handle such a massive flood situation.”
CM Sarma further said that there are complications in looking for a solution as new land would have to be acquired to create a new drainage system to handle such heavy flooding.
Blaming Meghalaya’s USTM University for the floods in Guwahati, CM Himanta said that the institute built its campus in the part of Meghalaya that comes down to Khanapara by cutting down an entire hill. Earlier, water used to flow to Guwahati slowly. However, the rampant destruction of hills has resulted in flooding.”
He said the construction should have been protested by the previous governments. “I shall speak to the Meghalaya CM, but the damage has already been done,” Sarma added.
Meanwhile, traffic advisory has been issued for the residents. The advisory said that in the event of heavy rainfall, there is likelihood of water logging leading to submergence of main road in areas like Rukminigaon, Juripar, Panzabari, Survey-Beltola Road, Zoo Road, Hatigaon road , SFS School, Satgaon, GNB Road, Boripara, Boragaon, Chandmari and Commerce college Point.
Commuters have been advised to avoid taking these roads in case of heavy rainfall.
