Assam celebrates the legacy of maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika across the state on his 93rd birth anniversary on Sunday. A host of special programmes have been organised to mark the legend’s birth anniversary.

Various organisations organised special programmes at Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s memorial in Guwahati. The day is of more significance as it marks the legends first birth anniversary after he was being conferred the Bharat Ratna.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal attended a special programme at the memorial of the musical maestro in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, AASU organised a cultural programme at Dighalipukhuri and paid tribute to Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s statue.

During the programme, AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharjee said that the railway station should be named after Dr Bhupen Hazarika along with the induction of a post at Gauhati University in his name.

The department of Mass Communication, Journalism and Media Studies at Cotton University celebrated ‘Mass Communication Day’ with immense vigour at the university hall on the occasion of Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s birth anniversary.

Eminent writer, actor and cultural activist Ratna Ojha briefly shared his experiences with Dr Bhupen Hazarika. He said that Dr Hazarika would write on ‘Luit’ even while sitting on the banks of Ganga.

Born on September 8, 1926 in Sadiya, the immortal Bard of Assam composed, wrote and sang for numerous Assamese, Bengali and Hindi films. He was one of the leading author-poets of Assam who penned over 1,000 lyrics, short stories, essays, travelogues, poems and documentaries.

Besides being a lyricist, writer and composer, Dr Hazarika was an educationist. He was the professor of Philosophy in Gauhati University in 1955-56. He also had a short stint in politics and was an independent member of the Assam Assembly.

Bhupen Hazarika, the name will forever be etched in the minds of the Assamese for his unparalleled contributions in the field of music, cinema, literature and more.
