Assam Cabinet Reshuffle: 4 New MLAs to be Inducted into Himanta Biswa Cabinet

Earlier in the day, Sanjoy Kisan, MLA from Tinsulkia, had stepped down as the Minister for Labour and Tea Tribes Welfare.

Four new faces will be included in the Himanta Biswa Cabinet in Assam. Rupesh Gowala, Krishnendu Pal, Prasanta Phukan, and Kaushik Rai are the MLAs who will be inducted into the Assam Cabinet tomorrow. The reshuffle comes ahead of the 2026 Assembly Elections.

Although the specific portfolios for the new ministers are yet to be confirmed, the inclusion of Krishnendu Pal and Kaushik Rai is particularly notable, as they represent the Barak Valley region.

Earlier in the day, Sanjoy Kisan, MLA from Tinsulkia, had stepped down as the Minister for Labour and Tea Tribes Welfare.

Who are the new faces?
Prasanta Phukan, MLA – He was elected in the Assam Legislative Assembly elections in 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021 from Dibrugarh. He is the incumbent MLA of Dibrugarh. In 2021, Prasanta Phukan won the Assam Legislative Assembly Election with a margin of 38,005 votes.

Kaushik Rai, MLA – He won the Lakhipur seat in the 2021 elections. He holds a B.Com degree from Gurucharan College and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Assam University.

Krishnendu Paul, MLA – A two-time MLA, Paul won the Patharkandi seat twice in 2016 and 2021.

Rupesh Gowala, MLA – He is a first time MLA from Doom Dooma. He won the seat in 2021.
