The Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, made several landmark decisions on Tuesday aimed at driving the state’s development and addressing long-standing public demands. Among the most notable was the renaming of Karimganj district to Sribhumi, inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s century-old description of the area as “the land of Maa Lakshmi.”
Announcing the decision on X, CM Sarma stated, “Over 100 years ago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore described modern-day Karimganj district in Assam as ‘Sribhumi’—the land of Maa Lakshmi. Today, the #AssamCabinet has fulfilled this long-standing demand of our people.”
In addition to the renaming, the Cabinet approved amendments to the State GST Act and announced plans to host the Assam Investment and Infrastructure Summit in 2025. The event, aimed at attracting global investors and strengthening the state’s economic prospects, will be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Assam Agroforestry Policy, 2024 was also introduced to enhance forest cover and promote agroforestry as a vital component of the agricultural ecosystem. Additionally, amendments to the Assam Unified Building Bye-laws were approved.
To facilitate the preparation of the electoral roll for the Panchayat elections, based on the Assam Legislative Assembly’s electoral roll prepared under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the Cabinet approved an amendment to Rule 12 of the Assam Panchayat (Constitution) Rules, 1995.
In another move, the Assam State Space Application Centre (ASSAC) was appointed as the nodal agency for remote sensing and geospatial activities, bolstering Assam’s technological capabilities.
