This victory marks a significant political achievement for the NDA alliance, further solidifying its position in Assam.

NDA alliance partners, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) today swept the bypolls in Assam as they won the 5 seats-Sidli, Bongaigaon, Samaguri, Behali, and Dholai with impressive margins.

BJP secured a historic win in the Samaguri which has been the bastion of Congress’ Rakibul Hussain for the last 5 terms and prior to that in 1981 and 1991 was held by his father Nurul Hussain. Diplu Ranjan Sarma emerged victorious with 78,789 votes defeating Rakibul Hussain’s son Tanzil Hussain on his electoral debut from the constituency.

Diplu Ranjan Sarma defeated Tanzil by a margin of 22,833 votes.

BJP’s Diganta Ghatowal won the Behali seat with 50,947 votes, defeating Congress’s Jayanta Borah by a margin of 9,051 votes.

BJP’s Nihar Ranjan Das secured a convincing win in Dholai, with 68,759 votes, defeating Congress’s Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha, son of the late two-time MLA Digendra Chandra Purkayastha, by a margin of 9017 votes.

UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma won the Sidli seat with 95,243 votes defeating his nearest rival Shuddho Kumar Basumatary of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) who polled 58,227 votes. While Congress’s Sanjib Warie managed to get just 7,634 votes.

Diptimayee Choudhury, AGP candidate and the wife of nine-time Bongaigaon MLA and current Barpeta Lok Sabha MP, Phani Bhusan Choudhury has won the Bongaigaon assembly seat with 74,734 votes. This is the ninth time that AGP has won the seat in a row.

This victory marks a significant political achievement for the NDA alliance, further solidifying its position in Assam, especially with UPPL’s growing presence in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

For Congress, however, the results are a setback, as the party had hoped to at least retain the Samaguri seat.
