In a big development, the capping operations at Well No.5 of Baghjan oilfields in Eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district has been successful with experts on ground managing to place the Blowout Preventer (BoP) stack on the well head in its third attempt on Monday, after 83 days since a major blowout took place on May 27.
A blowout preventer, or BOP, is a specially-designed valve that is mounted on top of the well during the drilling and completion stages of operation.
The development came after two failed attempts on July 31 and August 10, and a day after 4 global experts arrived in Duliajan and joined the capping operations.
Confirming the development, OIL spokesperson Tridiv Hazarika said that the BoP stack has been successfully installed. The highly sensitive and dangerous operation was initiated early this morning.
Hazarika further informed that the next leg of operation to kill the well will resume early morning tomorrow will be taken up after laying down pipes and it is expected that it may take another 6-7 hours. Fluid and chemical mud will be pumped into the well to kill it and douse the fire.
As per Oil India Limited (OIL) sources, 50 percent of dousing operations have been completed.
The well has been spewing gas ever since the blowout took place on May 27, before eventually catching fire on June 9.
