Assam Assembly Special Session: The move comes as part of the state’s celebrations marking the birth centenary of Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

A one-day special session of the Assam Assembly has been called on June 9 to pass a proposal for naming the Dibrugarh airport after Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

The move comes as part of the state’s celebrations marking the birth centenary of the legendary cultural icon Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Taking to X, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news and posted the official order by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.

The order stated, “In exercise of the powers conferred under Article 174(1) of the Constitution of India… I hereby summon a one-day Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly to meet at 9.30 A.M. on Monday, 9 June 2025, at the Assembly Chamber in Dispur.”

The Assam Cabinet had earlier approved the renaming of the airport as a tribute to Bhupen Hazarika for his immense contribution to the state’s cultural heritage.

The Dibrugarh Airport, located at Mohanbari around 15 km from the city, has played a pivotal role in connecting Northeast India with the rest of the country. Built in the early 1950s, it is among the region’s busiest airports, handling over a million passengers annually. It offers direct connectivity to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Guwahati. A major expansion in 2009 added a 113,410 sq ft integrated terminal and night landing facilities, enhancing its strategic importance.

Dr BhupenHazarika, the Bard of Brahmaputra

Bhupen Hazarika, often referred to as the “Bard of the Brahmaputra”, was a towering figure in the world of Indian art and culture. A singer, lyricist, poet, composer, filmmaker, educationist and activist, Hazarika’s works transcended regional boundaries and gave voice to the aspirations of the common man.

Deeply influenced by Assamese folk traditions and global icons like Paul Robeson, he created timeless classics such as “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” and “Bistirno Parore”. Hazarika also left an indelible mark on Assamese cinema, composing music for his first film at the age of 12.

An alumnus of Columbia University, he was honoured with numerous national awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1992), Padma Bhushan (2001), and the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2019. His legacy, enriched by a lifelong partnership with filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi, remains a powerful symbol of art’s role in social transformation.
