71.62% voter turnout recorded till 5 pm, in the first phase of polling in Assam Assembly elections, said the Election Commission of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged people to come out in large numbers and exercise their franchise as voting began in Assam and West Bengal.

Voters were seen queued up in large numbers across the state. The polling began at 7 am today and will continue till 6 pm.

A total of 264 candidates including 23 women are in the fray for 47 seats.

Polling for the next two phases will be held on April 1 and 6, counting for which will take place on May 2.
