Assam is all set for the first phase of Assembly polls on Saturday. Campaigning for the first phase will end on Thursday evening.
The Assam Assembly election campaign for all three phases will end 48 hours prior to the polling time, said the Election Commission of India on Wednesday.
As per the Election Commission’s schedule, 47 constituencies comprising of 12 districts will go to polls in the first phase.
In this phase, a total of 81,09,815 electors will decide the fate of 264 candidates.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state is campaigning aggressively to retain power. In 2016, the saffron party won for the first time by dethroning Congress, making it the party’s first win in any northeastern state.
BJP is contesting this elections in an alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). The ruling party will field candidates from 92 seats while the AGP and UPPL will enter the fray from 26 and 8 seats.
On the other hand, the Congress-led alliance ‘Mahajot’ comprises of AIUDF, CPI, CPI (M), CPI (ML), Anchalik Gana Morcha and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). The BPF was an NDA constituent, but it quit the alliance and sided with the opposition.
