Three phase Assam Assembly election from March 27; counting on May 2

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday announced the schedule for the Assam Assembly elections, which will be held in three phases.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora addressing a press conference said the state will go to polls on March 27 in the first phase for 47 constituencies.

The second phase of polling will be held on April 1 for 39 constituencies. In the third phase, 40 constituencies will go to polls on April 6. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 2.

According to the CEC, out of the total 126 Assembly seats in Assam, 8 are reserved for the Scheduled Caste candidates and 16 for Scheduled Tribes.

There are a total of 33,530 polling stations in Assam this year, an increase of 34.71 per cent over the last elections in 2016.

The CEC further announced that voting will be allowed for an extra one hour in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

Along with Assam, the Election Commission also announced the dates for Assembly elections in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry.
