Assam: 5 of a family killed in a massive landslide in Karimganj

Schools, colleges and other educational institutions have also been declared closed today and tomorrow in Karimganj in the wake of the alarming flood situation.
In a disheartening tragedy, five members of a family including three children lost their lives in a massive landslide caused by heavy rainfall in the Karimganj district of Assam.
The landslide occurred at Tajurtal village in Bendergol area of Badarpur in Karimganj at midnight on Wednesday, burying the family while they were asleep.
On receiving information about the incident, a joint team of the Badarpur Police and State Disaster Response Force, Assam rushed to the scene and retrieved the bodies from debris.
The deceased persons have been identified as Abdul Karim, his wife Raimunnesa( 55), his daughter Saheeda Khanum (18), Zaheeda Khanum, (16), and Hamida Khanum (11).
Several areas in Karimganj district continue to reel under severe floods. Water levels of Kushiyara, Longai and Singla rivers continue to rise at an alarming level.

Torrential rains over the last several days has aggravated the flood scenario in Assam.
Several parts of the state remain inundated as flood waters have increased with the rise in the river water levels.
According to inputs, over 1.6 lakh people have been affected by floods in 15 districts across the state.
In Gohpur, rising water levels of the Chatrang River have destroyed a bridge over the river cutting communications in the area.
A massive landslide took place near the Ashwaklanta temple in North Guwahati, affecting 3 families living in the vicinity.
Meanwhile, in Kampur over 300 families have been affected due to intense floods in the region.
Traffic has been disrupted on the Kampur-Bakulguri road which connects Karbi Anglong. Locals have also raised concerns over delays in the construction of embankments.
