The surrendered weapons include three AK-series rifles, 19 pistols, five other rifles, two grenades, and assorted live ammunition

In a big move towards peace, 39 Adivasi People’s Liberation Army (APLA) cadres joined the mainstream today (June 2).

The APLA cadres surrendered before the Assam Rifles and Bokajan police station and laid down a total of 31 weapons, including three AK-series rifles, 19 pistols, five other rifles, two grenades, and assorted live ammunition. They chose the path of peace and prosperity under Operation Samarpan.

Earlier, on January 22 this year, 46 cadres of the All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA) laid down their arms before the Assam police in Assam’s Sonitpur district.

The AANLA cadres surrendered their arms at a ceremony in Dhekiajuli and laid down 8 pistols, 6 rifles, and ammunition.

AANLA is among eight tribal militant organisations based in Assam that signed peace agreements with the government on September 15, 2022, in New Delhi.

AANLA was formed in 2006 with an aim to safeguard the tribal culture of the plantation workers, whose ancestors were brought from northern India by British colonialists. The outfit demanded Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Adivasi community and rehabilitation of the displaced members of its community.
