Assam: 3 ULFA(I) rebels surrender in Tinsukia

In a massive blow to the banned militant outfit ULFA-Independent, three of its rebels surrendered before security forces in Tinsukia.

Two of the three ULFA (Independent) members who surrendered to the authorities on Tuesday have admitted their involvement in the killing of five Bengali-speaking people in Kherbari village near the Dhola Sadiya bridge in November last year.

The two – Tiger Axom alias Bubul Moran and Swadesh Axom alias Binanda Dohotia – are currently in the custody of the Assam Police Special Branch along with the third member Tipom Axom.

Top security sources have told Northeast Live that three other ULFA (I) members were also involved in the attack on the Bengalis.

The case is under investigation by the National Investigation Agency and the Assam Police have now told the NIA it was free to have custody of the duo to take the probe further.

After the 10-day Myanmar Army crackdown in February on NSCN and other Northeast rebel camps in the jungles, a total of 20 ULFA (I) cadres have surrendered to authorities in Assam.

The rebels had laid down sophisticated weapons like HK or Heckler & Koch rifles besides assault rifles of the AK series, police said.
