At an elevation of 10,800 feet, Asia’s highest skywalk is being constructed at Bhaleydhunga Peak, located within the Mainam Wildlife Sanctuary in Yangang, South Sikkim. The Government of Sikkim has sanctioned Rs 220 crores for the first phase of this ambitious project. To facilitate the skywalk’s construction, a ropeway the second-highest in Asia has been built to transport materials and is now operational for passengers. The ropeway, stretching 3.5 kilometers from Dhapper to Bhaleydhunga, was inaugurated on September 16, 2024. Offering breath-taking views of Mount Kanchenjunga, the ropeway at an elevation of 1,800 meters to 3,500 meters has 18 cabins, each seating eight passengers, allow for the transport of 400 passengers per hour, with the journey taking approximately 11 minutes.
Speaking to North East Live, a local resident expressed excitement over the ropeway’s inauguration. “It’s a proud moment for us. Such a massive project has been completed under the vision of the Chief Minister. The tourism department and local residents have already started planning for hotels and homestays, which will significantly boost incomes in the area.”
A ropeway engineer involved in the project confirmed that ₹220 crores have been sanctioned for the first phase of the skywalk’s construction.
