Arunachal’s NES Leads Unique Wildlife Conservation Effort in Kra Daadi

Nyishi Elite Society (NES) in Arunachal Pradesh's Kra Daadi district has spearheaded a conservation initiative to curb hunting by seizing deposited weapons post-elections. Early results show an increase in wildlife

Arunachal Pradesh, once renowned for its rich biodiversity, is witnessing a rapid depletion of its green cover and wildlife due to various factors, including the rampant hunting of animals and birds. In a bold conservation effort, the Nyishi Elite Society (NES), the state’s largest Community-Based Organization (CBO), has launched a unique plan to halt hunting in the Kra Daadi district.

The initiative took advantage of the mandatory practice during elections, where gun owners are required to deposit their weapons with authorities. After holding discussions with other CBOs, Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members, and village leaders, the NES approached Kra Daadi’s Deputy Commissioner, Sunny K. Singh, with a request to retain the deposited weapons for at least two years.

In compliance with the Election Commission’s Model Code of Conduct, around 1,000 firearms were deposited by residents of Kra Daadi’s seven circles, which house a population of about 45,000. Commissioner Singh, known for his conservation efforts, endorsed the NES’s idea and worked with the society to develop a detailed strategy to curb hunting.

Local residents took oaths pledging their commitment to wildlife conservation. The forest department, alongside market committees, has been tasked with monitoring poaching and the sale of wildlife meat. Early reports from residents suggest that wildlife is beginning to thrive again, with birds being spotted in areas where they had long disappeared. Tichi Tabing, Chairman of the NES’s Kra Daadi unit, shared over the phone that the initiative has shown promising results, with hopes that this will mark the beginning of long-term wildlife recovery.
