Arunachal's Mithun Churpi is prepared using cow or yak milk, fermented & dried into a hard, long-lasting cheese popular in Himalayan regions.
In a historic milestone for Arunachal Pradesh, Tadang Tamut, a visionary farmer from Siang district, has crafted the world’s first Mithun Churpi, a traditional Himalayan cheese made for the first time using Mithun milk.
Traditionally, Churpi is prepared using cow or yak milk, fermented and dried into a hard, long-lasting cheese popular in Himalayan regions.
However, Tamut’s innovation using Mithun milk, a rare bovine species native to the region, not only showcases Arunachal’s unique biodiversity but also opens fresh avenues for value addition in local agriculture.
This breakthrough is expected to significantly boost Mithun-based farming, offering fresh potential for rural entrepreneurship and economic growth in the state.
It marks a step forward in integrating traditional practices with innovation to uplift tribal communities.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu, sharing the news on X, congratulated Tamut and the Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmers’ Federation. He wrote, “Delighted to meet Shri Tadang Tamut… Heartiest congratulations… for this inspiring achievement!”
Tamut’s creation has brought global attention to the state, setting a precedent for indigenous innovation and sustainable development.
