Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday informed that the state’s Freedom of Religion Act 1978 will soon have its rules framed and implemented in the state.
The act has been dormant until now in the state.
The Act aims ‘to provide for the prohibition of conversion from one religious faith to any other religious faith by use of force or inducement or by fraudulent means and for matters connected therewith.
Taking to X, CM Pema Khandu said, “To safeguard our indigenous culture, traditions, and faith, rules are being framed for the implementation of the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978.”
“As proud Bharatiyas, it is our solemn duty to protect all indigenous philosophical traditions and faiths such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and other indigenous faiths born in Bharat”, he added.
During the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Indigenous Faith and Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFCSAP) at IG Park in Itanagar, Khandu revealed that the Act was lying dormant, a recent directive from the Gauhati High Court has mandated the state government to frame its rules for execution and implementation.
Khandu further announced the process to rename the Department of Indigenous Affairs has been initiated.
“Indigenous faiths have been an integral part of humanity since time immemorial, even before the advent of organized religions. I am delighted to announce that the Department of Indigenous Affairs will now be renamed to include the words Indigenous Faith and Culture, a step forward in our commitment to preserving, promoting and protecting the rich heritage of indigenous traditions,” he added.
