Aruna Miller scripted history on Novemeber 8 when she became the first Indian-American politician to win the campaign for lieutenant governor in Maryland, a state bordering the US capital.

Former Maryland House delegate Miller, 58, ran for lieutenant governor alongside Wes Moore, the incoming Democratic governor.

Moore and Miller were declared winners over their Republican opponents on November 8 night, shortly after the polls closed. Moore and Miller were campaigned for by both Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden. Miller was born in Andhra Pradesh before moving to the United States with her parents.

When the Governor is unable or unwilling to serve, the Lieutenant Governor assumes the role of the state’s second-highest elected official. In the event of the Governor’s death, resignation, or removal from office, the Lieutenant Governor takes over as Governor as well.

Miller overcame last-minute opposition from detractors who accused her of recruiting Hindu nationalists, a charge she denied, to win the Maryland lieutenant governor race.

Her appeal to Indian Americans is widespread and partisan in Maryland. Leading Trump and Republican supporters spoke out in her support and raised funds. Jasdip Singh Jassee is well-known among them.
