Former APSC Chief Controller of Examination, Nandbabu Singh, has been arrested by the Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) for his alleged involvement in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) cash-for-job scam.
This has taken the total number of arrests made by the SIT in the case so far to 6.
Nandbabu Singh was arrested from Silchar and is currently being brought to CID headquarter in Guwahati for further investigation.
Singh is accused of raising the number of candidates in exchange for money.
Earlier in 2022, Nandbabu Singh burnt 49,000 copies of the APSC’s 2014 Combined Competitive Examination (Preliminary) OMR sheets.
The SIT has till date arrested Wahida Begum, Superintendent of Taxes of Karbi Anglong district, ADCP of the Guwahati Crime Branch, APS Sukanya Das, Assam Police Service officers – Sah Jahan Sarkar and Aishwarya Jeevan Barua, Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Rakesh Das for their alleged involvement in the scam.
Earlier this month, the Government of Assam had initiated departmental proceedings against 34 Assam Civil Service, Assam Police Service and other elite service officers selected by the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) for 2013 batch.
The state government had swung into action based on the one-man commission report of Retired Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma.
Appointments of the 2013 and 2014 APSC batches have been marred by controversies.
The then chairperson of APSC, Rakesh Paul, the prime accused in the APSC “cash-for-job” scam, has been in jail since 2016.
The state government has so far dismissed 57 persons who were selected in the civil service exams in 2013 and 2014.
