Cachar Police have deployed an ‘Anti-Romeo Squad’ ahead of the Durga Puja festival to curb eve-teasing and other crimes against women during the festivities.
Numal Mahatta, the district’s superintendent of police stated that the squad is made up of specially trained police officers who will keep a close eye on the town during the festival season. The Anti-Romeo Squad will conduct 24-hour patrolling on motorcycles throughout the district during the festival.
This special force has been trained for 15 days by external experts and was deployed on Monday.
“Durga Puja is the biggest festival here and it’ll be celebrated for three to four days. Women’s safety is our priority and this squad will be taking additional care,” Mahatta said.
Mahatta also stated that they have planned for traffic control as well as law and order during the Durga Puja. The squad, consisting of police officers and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, aims to maintain law and order amid the large crowds that gather in Silchar.
SP Mahatta emphasized the importance of safeguarding women and children during the festivities, noting previous issues with unruly behavior by some youths.
Last year’s initiative received positive feedback from the community, and SP Mahatta expressed hope that citizens would continue to support the police in ensuring a safe environment for all attendees.
