Opposition to the 12,500 MW mega dam and multipurpose storage project over the Siang river continues. Locals of Upper Siang district where the dam is proposed to come up, reiterated their objection to the project by showing placards which read No Mega Dam, We Want Justice at the consultative meet held in Yingkong today.

Noisy scenes were seen at the consultative meeting organized by the Upper Siang District Students Union in Yingkiong, the district headquarters of Upper Siang district. The meeting was attended by Arunachal Pradesh Lok Sabha MP Tapir Gao, minister Ojing Tasing, MLAs Alo Libang and Ninong Ering along with senior government officials of Upper Siang district.

Locals opposed to the multipurpose project hooted as the MP and MLAs spoke, trying to show their stiff opposition to the mega dam.

It might be mentioned that various organizations like the Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum and All Adi Welfare Society are strongly opposing the mega dam, which is to be implemented by the Central government public sector undertaking NHPC. The Arunachal Pradesh government too is pressing hard for the project as the dam is being seen as India’s counter to China’s colossal 60,000 MW dam.
