Another Eviction Drive Resumes in Sonapur’s Kosutoli, Authorities To Demolish Over 150 Illegal Structures
A second round of eviction is underway in the Kosutoli area of Sonapur, with authorities aiming to demolish over 150 illegal structures. This follows the first eviction drive on 12 September, which turned violent, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuries to several, including police officers.
The demolition targets large-scale illegal encroachments reported in Kosutoli and other areas of Sonapur, a tribal belt. Indigenous tribal communities have been protesting, demanding the removal of illegal settlers from their lands.
In light of a recent stay order by the Gauhati High Court, the documentation of 51 individuals is currently under review by the authorities. The court intervention has brought temporary relief for some, but the eviction drive continues amidst high tensions.
