Indian athlete Anju Bobby George has been bestowed with the ‘Woman of the Year’ award by World Athletics for the year 2021.

The international governing body of athletics, bestowed her with the honour for her “efforts in advancing the sport in India as well as inspiring more women to follow in her footsteps”.

The singular honour has elated the athletics fraternity of India. For George, she said that she was ‘humbled’ and ‘honoured’ by the award.

The athletics governing body also highlighted her role as a “constant voice for gender equality” and her mentoring of schoolgirls for future leadership positions within the sport.

Taking to Twitter, World Athletics wrote, “Congratulations to Anju Bobby George on being crowned this year’s Woman of the Year at the World Athletics Awards,”. “Her efforts in advancing the sport in India as well as inspiring more women to follow in her footsteps make her more than a worthy recipient of this year’s award,” it further added.


Anju, tweeted her thanks writing “Truly humbled and honoured to be awarded Woman of the Year by World Athletics,” on Twitter.

“There is no better feeling than to wake up every day and give back to the sport, allowing it to enable and empower young girls! Thank you for recognising my efforts,” she added.
