At a time when the state is hit by the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, the first wave of floods has taken a grip over Assam. Several parts of the state are reeling under flood waters causing a breakdown of communications.

Scores of people have been forced to leave their homes and move to safer places as the raging waters continue to rise. The monsoon fury in the state has already made its impact by causing severe inconveniences for people.

In Rangia, heavy flow of river has washed away the only wooden bridge in the Loroma-Gorhati area on Tuesday night, thereby snapping all communication among the neighbouring villages.

Meanwhile, floods are also wrecking havoc in Assam’s Nowboicha. Heavy rainfall has inundated the entire area with authorities yet to take stock of the situation.

Like every year, authorities in the renowned Kaziranga National Park are gearing up to fight flood situation. At least ten parts of the National Park have started to face the impact of floods owing to heavy rainfall over the past few days. Forest officials are using speed boats to perform their regular duties and move about the submerged areas. Moreover, 33 boats have been kept on standby as a precautionary measure.

Authorities have also issued Section 144 in National Highway 39 to control the movement of vehicles.

On the other hand, the rising waters of the Ghiladhari and Diring rivers in Biswanath district have aggravated the flood situation. The flood waters of the rivers have inundated large parts of the Borpathar region. Biswanath MLA Pramod Borthakur today visited the flood affected areas and took stock of the situation.

The BJP led Assam government is putting special focus on finding a solution to the yearly flood problem.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had made finding a solution to the flood problem as one of the BJP’s main poll plank during the recent state elections. State water resource minister Pijush Hazarika has been doing rounds of the state to take stock of the embankment preparations.

Most recently, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had stated that work towards finding a scientific solution to the state’s flood problems would start later this year and the results would be seen next year during the recurring monsoons.
