All Salt And Sugar Brands In India Contain Microplastics? Study Finds Shocking Results

Microplastics are commonly defined as solid plastic particles or synthetic fibres of the size between 1 µm and 5,000 µm, or micrometres
All Indian salt and sugar brands, packaged or unpackaged, contain harmful microplastics in significant amounts, according to a study published by environmental research organisation, Toxics Link on Tuesday.
The research organisation tested 10 types of salt including table salt, rock salt, sea salt and local raw salt and five types of sugar purchased from both online and local markets.
Microplastics are commonly defined as solid plastic particles or synthetic fibres of the size between 1 µm and 5,000 µm, or micrometres. They are composed of various polymer types, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, that can pose distinct environmental and health challenges.
Toxics Link said that a test carried out on 10 types of salt and five types of sugar, purchased from online and local markets, showed the presence of microplastics in all samples. The size of these microplastics ranged from 0.1 millimetre to 5 mm and was found in various forms such as fibre, pellets, films, etc.
According to the report, the highest quantity of microplastics was found in iodised salt at 89.15 pieces per kilogramme. Overall, the quantity ranged from 6.71 to 89.15 pieces per kg of dry weight in the salt samples. Organic rock salt had the lowest quantity at 6.70 pieces per kg.
In sugar samples, the microplastics ranged from 11.85 to 68.25 pieces per kg with non-organic sugar reporting the highest levels.
A PTI report cited past studies to say that Indians on average consume 10.98 grams of salt and around 10 spoons of sugar every day. This is much greater than the official recommended levels.
The highest levels of microplastics were found in iodised salt, in the form of multi-coloured thin fibre and films.
The PTI report quotes Toxics Link founder-director Ravi Agarwal , which says, “The objective of our study was to contribute to the existing scientific database on microplastics so that the global plastic treaty can address this issue in a concrete and focused manner.”
For the unversed, sugar provides a quick source of energy, essential for fueling physical activities and brain function. It also enhances the flavor of foods, making them more enjoyable. Salt, on the other hand, helps maintain the body’s fluid balance, supports nerve function, and plays a crucial role in muscle contractions. Additionally, salt enhances the taste of food, making it more flavorful and satisfying.
What is Microplastic?
For the unversed, Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that measure less than 5 millimeters in diameter. They are created when larger plastic debris breaks down over time or are intentionally produced for use in products like cosmetics, cleaning agents, and industrial processes. Microplastics are pervasive in the environment, found in oceans, rivers, soil, and even the air we breathe.
Take a look at the side effects of consuming microplastics
Toxicity: Microplastics can contain harmful chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, and heavy metals. These substances may leach into the body, leading to hormonal disruptions, reproductive issues, and other health problems.
Inflammatory Response: Microplastics can cause inflammation and oxidative stress in tissues, potentially leading to long-term damage, including cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
Gut Microbiome Disruption: Ingested microplastics may alter the gut microbiome, affecting digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function.
Bioaccumulation: Microplastics can accumulate in organs over time, potentially leading to chronic health issues.
