A special court in Ahmedabad today awarded the death penalty to 38 of 49 convicts in the Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts case in 2008.
The remaining 11 were awarded life imprisonment.
Last week, the court had convicted them for connection with the serial blasts.
It may be recalled that a series of bomb blasts in Ahmedabad on July 26, 2008, killed 56 people and injured over 200 others.

On that particular day, 21 bomb blasts occurred in Ahmedabad in a span of 70 minutes.
Special judge AR Patel acquitted 28 other accused, giving them the benefit of the doubt, in the verdict, which came 13 years after the serial blasts.
The blasts, according to the police, were carried out by members of the terror group Indian Mujahideen (IM). It was also stated that these explosions were planned as retaliation for the 2002 post-Godhra riots.
