Ahead of swearing-in, Narendra Modi pays tributes at memorials of Mahatma Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Ahead of being sworn in as the prime minister for a second consecutive term, Narendra Modi Thursday morning paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and BJP veteran late Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Modi began his day by paying homage to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat early this morning and later, he went to Sadaiv Atal to pay his tributes to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

He also placed a wreath at the National War Memorial adjoining the India Gate here. Several senior BJP leaders, including party chief Amit Shah, were also present.

In a series of tweets, Modi said, “This year, we mark the 150th Jayanti of Bapu. May this special occasion further popularise Bapu’s noble ideals and continue inspiring us to empower the lives of the poor, downtrodden and marginalised.”

“We remember beloved Atal Ji every single moment. He would have been very happy to see BJP get such a great opportunity to serve people. Motivated by Atal Ji’s life and work, we will strive to enhance good governance and transform lives,” the PM tweeted.

After galloping to victory with a massive mandate, Narendra Modi is all set to begin his second innings with the swearing in ceremony slated for 7 pm on Thursday.

President Ram Nath Kovind will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Modi and his ministerial colleagues at a glittering function on the forecourts of the Rashtrapati Bhawan, decked up for the grand occasion.

This is going to be the biggest-ever function to be hosted by Rashtrapati Bhawan with 8,000 guests, including dignitaries from the BIMSTEC nations, in attendance.

It is customary for the previous presidents, prime ministers and veteran politicians from all parties to attend swearing-in ceremonies.

While chief ministers and BJP allies from across the nation are slated to attend the swearing-in, including Congress President Rahul Gandhi, besides top Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Dr Manmohan Singh, there are several leaders who have decided to give the occasion a miss.

Those who are not attending the swearing-in include West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Punjab chief minister Capt Amrinder Singh, and Kerala Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Top BJP and NDA leaders from the Northeast are also slated to attend the Prime Minister’s swearing in ceremony.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma, Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb among others are in Delhi for the grand swearing in.

Meanwhile, a multi-layered security arrangement is in place in Delhi, with deployment of around 10,000 security personnel from Delhi Police and paramilitary forces on account of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing in.

Over 10,000 security personnel from Delhi Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed. 2,000 security personnel will also be deployed along the route to be taken by Modi and other foreign dignitaries.

A traffic advisory issued a day ahead of the ceremony said several roads in New Delhi district will be closed for movement of public between 4 PM to 9 PM on Thursday and motorists and public were asked to avoid them.
