During the search operation, Sonitpur police recovered and seized substantial amount of explosive material.
Ahead of 76th Republic Day celebrations in the state, Assam Police have recovered a cache of explosives, including five hand grenades, three detonators and other materials used in the installation of bombs.
Based on reliable information regarding the secret storage of illegal arms and ammunitions buried underground in the jungle area near Khwbra village, Batashipur under Dhekiajuli Police Station, a search operation was conducted on Friday night, Sonitpur informed on Saturday.
During the search operation, Sonitpur police recovered and seized substantial amount of explosive material. The war-like items were found buried in the ground.
Taking to X, Sonitpur Police wrote, “During the search, the following articles were recovered after digging up the site. The items were found wrapped in a polythene bag and seized as per the prescribed procedure: * 05 nos. of 36 𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙨 * 2. 03 nos. of 𝘿𝙚𝙩𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨.”
“One of the grenades had damaged pin/ lever. So it has been kept in a secured area under guard. BD squad of the Army is being contacted to dispose it at the earliest”, Police added.
In a proactive move to ensure safety ahead of Republic Day, Assam police, for the past several days, have been clearing vehicles left unattended in areas considered vulnerable to potential security threats.
This action comes as a precautionary measure following last year’s Independence Day incident, when explosives were found in unclaimed vehicles by the banned group.
In addition, sniffer dogs are being deployed to conduct thorough checks for explosives, aimed at preventing any possible attacks and minimizing spaces where bombs could be hidden.
