Agartala: Angered by Photo on Facebook, Estranged Husband Kills Wife and Mother-in-Law

The accused, Samarjit Choudhury, was arrested soon after fleeing the scene.

Infuriated by a photo on Facebook, an estranged husband killed his wife and his mother-in-law in Agartala.

The incident took place in the early hours of Dashami in Agartala’s ONGC Netaji Nagar area. The victims, Tanushree Acharya and her mother Soma Acharya, were attacked by Tanushree’s estranged husband, Samarjit Choudhury, according to police reports.

Tanushree and Samarjit had been living separately for over a year, with a divorce case pending in court. While Tanushree was staying at her parental home, their two sons were living with Samarjit.

Dr. Kiran Kumar, Superintendent of Police (SP) of West Tripura district, revealed that on Saturday evening, Tanushree posted a photo on Facebook with two young men. This post allegedly infuriated Samarjit, leading him to plot the attack.

In the early hours of Sunday, Samarjit hid near his in-laws’ house. Around 4 AM, when Tanushree and her mother returned home after Durga Puja rituals, Samarjit ambushed them. He attacked Tanushree with a da (a sharp weapon), and when her mother tried to intervene, she too was fatally struck. Both women died on the spot due to their injuries.

Upon receiving the information, the Amtali Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, immediately arrived at the crime scene and launched an investigation. Suspicion quickly fell on Samarjit.

Samarjit fled to Madhupur after the attack but was soon arrested, confirmed SP Kiran Kumar. The accused has since confessed to the crime, and further investigations are underway.
