After ‘love jihad’, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to fight ‘fertiliser jihad’

After ‘love jihad’, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has now coined a new phrase ‘fertiliser jihad’ concerned about the excessive use of fertilisers on crops.

In a speech calling for the development and implementation of natural farming at an event in Guwahati, CM Sarma said that during the election campaign in 2021, his government had committed to fight against “fertiliser jihad”.

While campaigning for the 2021 Assembly elections, when he was the Health Minister in Sarbananda Sonowal’s government, he said Assam was under “chemical and biological attack” from “a section of people who live in Kharupetia and Dalgaon”.
“People of Jorhat, Sivasagar and other Upper Assam districts are dependent on vegetables from Kharupetia and Dalgaon. But those farmers use dangerous chemicals for quick production and preservation of vegetables,” Sarma had said.

CM Sarma said that in the last one year, during several meetings, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged Assam’s organic farming.

“When we started our government, we stated that the uncontrolled use of fertilizers for growing various food materials in Assam is causing problems of the kidney, heart, etc. We have checked our reports that on our land and nature, we have a huge prospect and if we learn to use it, we will not need urea, phosphate, nitrogen, etc. We should use fertiliser but excess of it can harm the body,” the Chief Minister added.
