In a big development and in some good news for the people of Assam, Centre has announced the withdrawal of AFSPA (Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act) from 4 of the 8 districts of the state.
Sharing the news today, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh said that AFSPA is now applicable in 4 districts only — Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar and Tinsukia.
The DGP made the announced during the Police Day celebrations.
The Government of Assam is striving towards complete withdrawl of AFSPA from the state.
Recently during the state cabinet meet, the proposal for removal of AFSPA was approved and submitted to the Union Home Ministry.
The state government is working towards the complete removal of AFSPA by 2024, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said.
