An earthquake struck western Afghanistan on Monday, killing at least 26 people, according to an official.

The victims died after the roofs of their homes collapsed in the Qadis area in Badghis’ western province, according to provincial spokesman Baz Mohammad Sarwary.

According to the US Geological Survey, the shallow quake had a magnitude of 5.3.
“The earthquake killed 26 individuals, including five women and four children,” Sarwary added, adding that four more were injured.

Afghanistan is already facing a humanitarian crisis, which was exacerbated by the Taliban’s takeover of the country in August, when Western governments halted international help and restricted access to assets stored overseas.

Qadis is one of the areas hardest hit by the drought, and it has received little international aid in the last 20 years.

Earthquakes frequently strike the region, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which is along the tectonic plate boundary between the Eurasian and Indian plates.

In impoverished Afghanistan, earthquakes can inflict substantial damage to poorly constructed homes and businesses.
