A wave of controversy has hit social media ahead of the Netflix premiere of ‘Maharaj’, the debut film of Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan.
Hashtags such as ‘Boycott Netflix,’ ‘Ban Maharaj Film,’ and ‘Aamir Khan’ began trending on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, just a day before the film’s release on June 14.
Several people had claimed that the Netflix has been promoting ‘anti-Hindu’ content.
Many Hindu activists have taken to social media to express their disapproval of the film because it reportedly shows religious authorities in a negative picture.
Many Hindu users were outraged at the period drama, claiming that the movie depicted sadhus (Hindu saints and preachers ) in a negative light. While another said, “Aamir Khan launches his son by throwing dirt on Sanatan Dharma.”
One X user wrote, “O Hindu wake up… A father (Aamir Khan) makes fun of Lord Shiva by releasing the movie ‘PK’ & his son defames the Hindu religion, and cultural tradition by releasing the movie ‘Maharaj’! This movie must be boycotted..#BoycottNetflix Ban Maharaj Film.”

Another condemned the ‘PK’ star for launching his son in such a controversial movie. “Hindumisic movie creating a false image of Sadhus and the Vallabh Sampradaya, by quoting an incident during the British regime “, ranted another user.
“Netflix is back with Anti-Hindu Content. Amir Khan launches his son by throwing dirt on Sanatan Dharma. The Film shows Hindu Sadhus as miscreant and lustful. Will Amir Khan make such movie on Islam and Maulana? It’s time Hindus Boycott @NetflixIndia #BoycottNetflix”, another user added.
